Arsenal and Crystal Palace battled for the final spot in the League Cup semi-finals . In a packed Emirates Stadium, the Premier League leaders struggled to break down the Eagles' defense, led by an outstanding Walter Benitez. Benitez eventually conceded from a set piece, as is often the case against Mikel Arteta's men.
Lacroix deflected the ball into his own net from Saka's corner, which was headed in by Calafiori (1-0, 80th minute). Arsenal were in control until Saliba conceded an avoidable foul. From the resulting free-kick on the left taken by Wharton, Jefferson Lerma outmaneuvered Calafiori, allowing Guéhi to beat Arrizabalaga and send the match to penalties. After a hard-fought shootout in which both penalty takers were remarkably accurate, Arrizabalaga saved Lacroix's penalty to secure qualification for the Gunners (1-1, 8-7 on penalties). They join Chelsea, Manchester City, and Newcastle, the defending champions, at the top of the table.
