Valentin Rongier joins Stade Rennais

Stade Rennais has made its first signing. Valentin Rongier, who had been targeted by Stade Rennais since last winter, had remained at Olympique de Marseille until the end of the season. But six months later, the situation has clearly changed. And for good reason: the former Nantes player, who arrived in Marseille in 2019, has seen his status clearly evolve over the course of 2025. Appreciated by Roberto De Zerbi, he was finally on the way out this summer, and the Italian coach recently explained the reasons for his departure .

"We had to make Rongier understand that he remained at the center of the project, at the center of the team. The proposal was made, and it was good, Medhi (Benatia) told me. But it was rejected. And with a year left on the contract, it's no longer a technical issue, and it doesn't concern me anymore. It's not my role to talk about figures, and I don't know them. It's a shame because Rongier was an important and ideal player for Marseille ," he assured this Monday. And everything happened very quickly between OM and Stade Rennais in a three-cushion deal.

Quentin Merlin will follow Valentin Rongier

Because Stade Rennais has just announced the arrival of the 30-year-old midfielder, who is joining the Breton club until 2028. "An experienced player in the championship with 271 Ligue 1 matches under his belt, a regular starter under the Marseille banner, Valentin Rongier from Mâconnais is joining Stade Rennais FC. He is a significant reinforcement joining the Rouge et Noir midfield (...) the experienced relay player is taking on a new challenge in a championship he knows perfectly. Here he is Rouge et Noir, signed until 2028 ," it is explained.

But as we revealed , that's not all. For a few days, Rennes has been in talks with OM to attract the 23-year-old left defender, Quentin Merlin, and the 30-year-old midfielder. After selling Adrien Truffert for 17 million euros to Bournemouth, Rennes should indeed get the full-back, in addition to Valentin Rongier for a sum of 22.5 million euros, bonuses included. A well-started transfer window for the Bretons and two important sales that will accelerate the Marseille transfer window.
