After Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atlético Madrid, it was Chelsea 's turn to enter the Club World Cup for a fairly even match against Giroud and Lloris' Los Angeles FC. At Atlanta's sublime Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Blues, with Neto, Palmer, Madueke, and Jackson, took on the Californian club, with Lloris and Bouanga starting from the start. Nkunku, Giroud, Gusto, Andrey Santos, and Sarr started on the bench.
And unsurprisingly, Chelsea settled quietly into the opposing half, but without really putting on a threat. The first attack came from the left with a breakthrough from Madueke, who was denied by Lloris (18th). The game then accelerated and the Londoners looked more dangerous until the opening goal with a great move from Neto, who beat Hollingshead in the box with a hook before finding the side netting (1-0, 34th).
Los Angeles may have regrets
After the break, the Blues attacked with the same intensity as at the end of the first half, but failed to make the difference, as evidenced by a header from Jackson (49th). But Chelsea were not really safe and LAFC, with Giroud since halftime, created a few chances, which Bouanga could not convert (55th and 66th). And by dominating, Chelsea managed to break away thanks to a beautiful action between Palmer, the new recruit Delap and Enzo Fernández at the conclusion (2-0, 80th).
This put an end to the suspense, as LAFC failed to come back in the final moments and gave the Londoners a quiet end to the match, before a final shot from Neto hit the crossbar (90th + 5). Chelsea therefore began their Club World Cup campaign in a fine manner and placed themselves at the top of Group D before facing the Brazilians of Flamengo on the second day. For their part, Los Angeles will have to do better against Esperance de Tunis.
