We didn't need this winter to know how little regard BlueCo's management has for Strasbourg. And Mamadou Sarr's return to Chelsea mid-season is unlikely to ease tensions among the club's loyal fans. Since its acquisition by the American consortium in 2023, Racing has acted as a satellite club for Chelsea, where talented players blossom before being snapped up by the London club.
It is this power dynamic, where Strasbourg seems forced to submit to the dictates of its counterpart, that continues to fuel the anger of Strasbourg fans for many months. After the transfer of Emmanuel Emegha to Chelsea, officially announced in September (he will join the London club this summer), and the departure of Liam Rosenior to the Blues in January, the English club today officially announced the return of Mamadou Sarr from his loan.
A movement that will continue to generate discussion
“ Mamadou Sarr has returned to Chelsea after his loan spell at Strasbourg SC ,” Chelsea’s statement read. Signed for €14 million last summer, the 21-year-old defender participated in the Club World Cup before being sent back on loan to Racing to gain experience.

Welcome back, Mamadou! 💙
His first six months, coupled with his impressive performances in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final and final with Senegal, certainly reinforced BlueCo's decision to recall him sooner than expected. Liam Rosenior also reportedly pushed to bring back his former defender, who will find himself competing with Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Benoît Badiashile. In exchange, Strasbourg is preparing to acquire Aaron Anselmino, the Argentinian defender targeted by Marseille several months ago and currently on loan at Dortmund for the first half of the season.
