Liverpool are perhaps going through their most difficult period under Arne Slot, with three defeats in a week, the latest of which was against Chelsea (2-1) at Stamford Bridge. Despite a good start to the season in terms of scoring, flaws in the Reds' style of play were quickly highlighted. Jamie Carragher , the club's former iconic defender and now a consultant, had already expressed his doubts after the first matchday, criticizing the team's balance. Successive defeats against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea only reinforced his concerns, particularly regarding defensive fragility and a lack of control in the game. This prompted him to voice strong criticism of the Dutch coach.
" Liverpool aren't playing football right now, they're playing basketball. It's just back and forth, and I don't think the best teams play like that ," he said on Sky Sports ' Super Sunday Extra Time . "I had already raised (my concerns about Liverpool's play) with the manager at the start of the season, and he obviously knows a lot more than I do. He's obviously a fantastic manager. But right now, Liverpool have gone from a top team, a very hard-working team last season, to a team where we've sprinkled a little bit of magic with the new signings. Except they haven't won anything offensively, and they've lost a lot defensively. For the manager, last season was a breeze. Now he's going to have to really prove himself. He did that last year, winning the Premier League , which was incredible. But now there are a lot of issues to address, and it'll be really interesting to see how he goes about it."
