What if India had turned down a Spanish legend for its national team coaching position? According to the Times of India , the Indian Football Federation received an application in the name of Xavi Hernández as part of the recruitment process for its new national team coach. The former FC Barcelona coach reportedly sent his application by email, like the 170 other candidates. But one detail cast doubt on this application: no contact number was attached to the message. This lack of information led the federation to reject the application, despite the credible email address and Xavi's recent statements stating that he follows Indian football very closely.
The prospect, while attractive, was quickly deemed unrealistic by the AIFF, particularly for economic reasons. "Even if he was really interested, we would have needed a lot of money to convince him ," a member of the technical committee reportedly admitted. The federation ultimately narrowed its list to three finalists, including Harry Kewell, before moving on to Khalid Jamil, a former Indian international, who is expected to take charge of the Blue Tigers.
