Club World Cup: Borussia Dortmund gets a scare but holds off the Rayados de Monterrey

Last night, the Club World Cup round of 16 came to a close. Real Madrid had secured their place in the quarter-finals a few hours earlier by defeating Juventus (1-0). This time, Borussia Dortmund faced Rayados de Monterrey , intent on joining and challenging the Merengues in the next round. The Germans opted for a traditional 3-4-3 formation, notably featuring Jobe Bellingham in support of Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy. For their part, the Mexicans played in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Sergio Ramos in defense and Jesus Corona, Oliver Torres, and Sergio Canales supporting Germán Berterame.

After a few minutes of warm-up where the Rayados de Monterrey dictated their pace, Nelson Deossa got the ball rolling with a long-range shot that lodged in the gloves of Gregor Kobel (11th). Borussia Dortmund's response was imminent. Served by Jobe Bellingham in front of the Mexican penalty area, Serhou Guirassy combined with Karim Adeyemi who passed to him in the box to finish (1-0, 14th). Monterrey then tried to come back and Jesus Corona found himself alone in front of Gregor Kobel, but missed his one-on-one (19th). More clinical, Borussia Dortmund would finally pull away and thus validate their effectiveness.

Borussia Dortmund can thank Serhou Guirassy

Karim Adeyemi was once again in charge with a nice piece of work down the right flank followed by a cut-back through the middle. Without faltering, Serhou Guirassy gave his team more breathing space (2-0, 24th). The Guinean striker could have even scored a hat-trick, but lacked bite on two close chances (31st and 34th). Ultimately, nothing changed until halftime. The return from the locker room, however, was brilliant with this cross from Sergio Canales taken by Erick Aguirre and then pushed into the back of the net by Germán Berterame (2-1, 48th).

This equalizer woke up the Rayados de Monterrey, who pressed a little harder on the counterattack. Released behind the defense by Oliver Torres, Jesus Corona missed a one-on-one with Gregor Kobel (60th). The former FC Porto player tried again, but shot over the bar (64th). Worse, Germán Berterame thought he was seeing double, but his goal was disallowed for offside (65th). Dortmund retreated, but came close to scoring twice through Serhou Guirassy (75th and 76th). Monterrey pushed, as with this Oliver Torres volley (79th), but were unable to break their opponent. Sergio Ramos could even have equalized with a header (90th +1). Controlling the end of the match, Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 and will meet Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
