The Club World Cup Round of 16 kicks off with an all-Brazilian clash between Palmeiras and Botafogo . Having secured first place in the group stage , Verdão arrive with ambition and confidence, having managed to claim first place in Group A ahead of Inter Miami, Porto and Egyptian club Al-Ahli. Opposite, Botafogo, second behind PSG but ahead of Atlético Madrid, have shown they can compete with the big teams. Palmeiras line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Giay on the right, solid midfielder Allan-Martinez, and young talent Estevão starting on the wing. Botafogo, sticking to their 4-3-3, prefers Danilo Barbosa to Montoro in midfield.
The match took a while to get going, but Palmeiras created a very tense first situation. Vitor Roque dived to finish off a powerful cross from Piquerez in front of goal, but Barboza appeared at the last minute to clear the danger (10th minute). Igor Jesus was then targeted by Artur in the box, but was fairly pushed by a defender and lost the ball without being sanctioned (14th minute). A minute later, Vitor Roque collapsed in the box after contact, but referee François Letexier chose not to award a penalty (15th minute).
A rough end to the match
The end of the first half was relatively uneventful, apart from two notable plays. In the 44th minute, Marlon Freitas produced a fine solo effort to sneak into the box, but his right-footed shot went wide of the target. In added time, Richard Rios ignited the stadium with a powerful long-range effort: his splendid strike grazed the crossbar (45th + 5). After the break, Botafogo had a difficult start to the second half, put under pressure by Palmeiras' renewed intensity. From the opening minutes, Estevão, Allan and Savarino made quick and incisive moves, disrupting the opposing defensive block (47th, 48th, 50th). Vitor Roque then attempted an acrobatic move while the ball was hanging around in the Botafogo box, but his attempt was blocked by a defender (59th).

Shortly after, John Victor made another fine save, pushing away a header from Mauricio that was heading towards the top corner. The ball went out for a corner, giving Palmeiras another chance (73'). Luighi, who had come on for Estevao a few minutes earlier, tried his luck on the edge of the box, but his shot was well blocked (80'). Regulation time ultimately produced no winner. The match therefore went to extra time. Palmeiras opened the scoring thanks to a remarkable individual move by Paulinho on the right, who dribbled past his opponent before unleashing a powerful, low shot with his left foot. The ball slid low into the net, leaving John without a reaction (100', 1-0). Reduced to ten men after Gustavo Gómez's sending off in extra time, Palmeiras still snatched victory against Botafogo. The club will meet the winner of the match between Benfica and Chelsea on July 5 in Philadelphia.
