FC Barcelona: Why Eric Garcia turned down PSG

In recent weeks, both Catalan and French media outlets have reported a strong interest from the capital club in Eric Garcia (24). Behind the scenes, Luis Enrique is said to have been pushing for the Barcelona center-back to make a move, which could have been a fantastic opportunity given that his contract expires at the end of the season. However, all indications are that he will remain in Catalonia.

Several Spanish media outlets, such as Mundo Deportivo, indicate that an agreement has been reached for the player, who was trained at La Masia and played for Manchester City, to remain at Barcelona until 2030. Brilliant this season and the only player to have played all 25 matches for his team this season, capable of playing in the centre of defence, on the right side or in midfield, he will therefore extend his stay, refusing PSG .

The new leader of Barça

Why did he choose to stay in Catalonia? First and foremost, there was the trust placed in him by Barça and Hansi Flick, who consider him an essential player and a potential captain in the medium to long term. Little by little, he is establishing himself as one of the team's most important players and as one of Barcelona's new leaders. Eric Garcia is also very happy and comfortable in Barcelona, particularly in the dressing room, where he gets along exceptionally well with his teammates, whom he also plays with on the Spanish national team.

However, PSG could have had a serious option had they made their move earlier, as Eric Garcia seriously considered leaving twice in recent months. First in January 2025, then again in the summer, and Hansi Flick had to convince him to stay. Financial considerations don't seem to be a factor, since Paris Saint-Germain, and especially interested English clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham, could have offered the player a much higher salary than what he will receive in his new contract with Barcelona. Luis Enrique will therefore have to explore other options…
